Arsenal will aim to prevent an uneasy situation descending further by holding talks over a possible January exit for an out of favour star.
Mikel Arteta made it a mission to reinforce an Arsenal defence that had for many years been considered the club’s weakness.
Improved defensive displays have been forthcoming, with summer recruit Gabriel Magalhaes a particular bright spark.
One player who had visions of turning out in the Arsenal backline at the start of the season was William Saliba.
The French youngster moved to The Emirates in the summer of 2019. Thoguh as predicted, he was immediately loaned back to former club Saint-Etienne.
With Arteta opting to deploy a back three this season, hopes were high in the Saliba camp of being able to make telling contributions from the off.
The 19-year-old was overlooked, however, with Arsenal ultimately seeking to loan the rising star out to Ligue 1 once again in the summer window.
Such a deal with Saint-Etienne sadly broke down, however, much to the dismay of both Arteta and the player himself.
The handling of the situation drew criticism from a club legend. While Saliba’s omission from The Gunners’ Europa League squad will have done little to improve his mood.
Now, according to The Evening Standard, Arsenal will seek to rescue the situation and ‘ensure the right outcome is reached’.
They reveal ‘talks are planned ahead of the transfer window’, with the option of a loan exit touted once again.
Saliba is yet to make his first-team debut for the club. His appearances this season have been limited to the EFL Trophy with the Under-21s and the Premier League 2.
Willian reveals factors behind Arteta genius
Meanwhile, Arsenal winger Willian says that he has “no doubt” that manager Mikel Arteta’s will be one of the world’s best football coaches in the near future.
Arteta began his coaching career in 2016, learning his trade under Pep Guardiola‘s wing at Manchester City.
Indeed, working with an already world-renowned coach saw Arteta’s stock rise significantly. So much so that he became the Gunners’ head coach in December last year.
The Spaniard has already turned Arsenal’s fortunes around from where they were under his predecessor, Unai Emery. What’s more, he has silverware to match his progress, winning the Community Shield and FA Cup in 2020.
As such, Willian believes that it is only a matter of time before further, more prized trophies, come Arteta’s way.
