Former Stoke coach Kevin Phillips believes it would be a big mistake for Liverpool to make a move for Potters goalkeeper Jack Butland.
The champions face a dilemma between the sticks with Alisson set to miss up to six weeks after a suffering a shoulder injury.
Adrian has previously stood in for the Brazilian but the Spaniard has made a growing number of mistakes.
The latest came when his poor pass gifted Aston Villa their opening goal in Liverpool’s astonishing 7-2 loss last Sunday.
The Reds still have until Friday October 16 to sign players from EFL clubs. And with Butland currently out of favour with the Potters, his name has been linked heavily with a move to Anfield.
Butland has won nine caps for England but the last of those came in 2018. And he now finds himself down the pecking order at Championship side Stoke.
Former Golden Boot winner Phillips, a former coach at Stoke, believes the Reds should stay clear as Butland makes far too many mistakes.
And, in that sense, he wouldn’t be an upgrade on what Liverpool already have in Adrian.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, Phillips said: “Over the past two years Jack has been far too inconsistent. When I worked with him he made far too many mistakes.
“For me, he has fallen right down the pecking order of Championship goalkeepers.
“Jack possibly had his head turned a few years ago and has taken his eye off the ball a little bit in recent seasons.
“Look what happened to Joe Hart, how quickly he faded away. I think it is a similar scenario with Jack.”
Hart hasn’t played for England since 2017. He’s also struggled to find a new permanent home since Pep Guardiola moved him on from Manchester City.
The former England No.1 is now at Tottenham.
Reports refute Liverpool talks with Butland
How true the Liverpool link with Butland is remains open to question.
The Liverpool Echo reports that the Reds have “zero interest” in Butland. And they add that there won’t be a move for any goalkeeper before the domestic transfer window closes.
The Echo state that Klopp is happy to keep faith with Adrian. And that highly-rated youngster Caoimhin Kelleher will continue to serve as back-up.
However, Thisisanfield note that the Echo continually claimed that Thiago was “not an active target” in the weeks before his eventual £25million switch to Liverpool.
That said, they also doubt the Butland links. But in addition they put forward two other names from the free agent market that would be better options if Liverpool do move.
They are Croatian stopper Danijel Subasic, who recently ended his long spell at Monaco. And former Spurs back-up Michel Vorm.
