Rio Ferdinand thinks that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire would benefit from a break.
It has been a difficult start to the season for Maguire, on and off the field. With United, he has lost two of his first three games this season, before being sent off in his most recent appearance for England.
Maguire‘s position has been put into focus since then. There have been some calls for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop him from the United lineup so he can re-focus.
And former Red Devils defender Ferdinand believes that would be the best thing to do in order to ensure Maguire’s long-term success.
“In these situations – that I’ve been in as well – you sometimes need to be taken out of the oven,” Ferdinand said.
“Ole has a big job on his hands and I think quite an important role to play in this. Whether maybe it’s time to give him a little rest, let him gather himself and build that confidence back up.
“I got brought off in one game, I think it was Middlesbrough away, the manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] spoke to me and said, ‘get yourself back to basics, train well and you’ll come back in’.
“That’s what happened and I was fine. It’s just sometimes that bit of pressure being taken out that can actually help you.

“When you’re going game-to-game every three or four days, it’s very hard to see through the fog. But when you’re taken out of the firing line, you get time to sit back and actually analyse yourself, your performance, your preparation, your recovery – all aspects of what goes around a football match or 90 minutes.
“It’s then about rebuilding yourself and playing simple. Effectively trying to get through a game without being seen.
“It might sound silly but that’s the way I used to look at it when I was lacking a little bit of confidence. Because at the moment you’re being seen for all the wrong reasons.”
Maguire does not want a rest
However, a report from the Mirror claims that Maguire himself does not want to be taken out of the firing line.
United return to action on Saturday after the international break. Looking to bounce back from the 6-1 defeat they suffered to Tottenham in their most recent league game, Solskjaer’s side will face Newcastle.
According to the Mirror, Maguire will not ask to be rested, meaning it will be Solskjaer’s decision if he plays or not.
The former Leicester defender feels physically fit despite missing some pre-season training due to his court case in Greece. Therefore, he still considers himself available for selection and does not want a break.
England manager Gareth Southgate also suggested that the best way for Maguire to regain his form would be to “play your way through these moments”.
