Leicester City have revived their interest in Burnley centre-back James Tarkowksi, according to reports.
Tarkowksi was among Leicester’s candidates to replace Harry Maguire following the England defender’s move to Manchester United last summer. However, the Foxes ultimately stuck with Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu.
Then, in January, Ryan Bennett arrived at the King Power Stadium on loan, but he has since returned to Wolves – meaning there is still a space for a defender in Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
Leicester could go back in for a defensive reinforcement before this transfer window closes. And Tarkowksi has emerged on their radar once more.
According to the Daily Star, Leicester are now ready to make a £30m bid for Tarkowksi. However, Burnley value him at £50m.
The Clarets are already planning to reject a £25m offer from West Ham for the 27-year-old. But Leicester are prepared to go higher – and won’t give up even if their initial offer is rejected.
Tarkowksi has two years left on his contract at Turf Moor. A move to Leicester would give him the chance to play in the Europa League, a competition he got a glimpse of with Burnley in 2018.
Burnley have already trimmed their defensive options by sending outcast Ben Gibson on loan to Norwich City. And potentially losing Tarkowski would be a much bigger blow.
Sean Dyche was frustrated to lose the likes of Jeff Hendrick and Aaron Lennon as free agents before the end of last season, and the Star admit that it would be a “crushing blow” for the well-respected manager to see one of his key players follow them out of the exit door at Turf Moor.
West Ham and Leicester both keen to add defenders
As for West Ham’s interest in the player, David Moyes is keen for defensive reinforcements at the London Stadium.
TEAMtalk exclusively revealed last week that the Hammers are in the hunt for Jean-Claude Billong, who can leave Salernitana this month.
Reports elsewhere have also suggested West Ham could rival Leeds for the signing of Ukraine international Mykola Matviyenko.
Tarkowksi is not the only defender Leicester are battling West Ham for, though. Recent reports indicated that both clubs were keen on Samuel Umtiti, whom Barcelona are willing to loan out or even release.
