Arsenal are set to increase their bid for Houssem Aouar after learning they face serious competition for the Lyon star.
Mikel Arteta wants to revamp his midfield and wants Aouar as well as Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.
Arsenal’s hopes of securing Aouar received a timely lift last week. As per Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Aouar agreed personal terms on a five-year deal with the Gunners earlier this month.
He added that Arsenal are yet to agree a deal with Lyon, but they will now up their efforts to secure an agreement with the Ligue 1 side.
Earlier this summer, Arsenal saw Lyon reject their offer of Matteo Guendouzi in part exchange.
However, they are now ready to launch a second bid to sign the 22-year-old.
As per French outlet Le10 Sport, the Gunners are set to submit an improved offer of around £36m for Aouar.
The article does report Arsenal are wary of bidding ‘too much’ for the player. That’s because Lyon are desperate to offload players this summer having missed out on European football.
Lyon do rate Aouar in the €60m (£54m) bracket, but it’s claimed could accept a lower offer this summer.
Whether Arsenal’s bid turns out to be enough remains to be seen. The Daily Telegraph reports the Gunners must also be wary after another suitor made an approach for Aouar.
The as yet unnamed club do hold a key advantage over Arsenal, however, in that they can offer him Champions League football.
However, Arteta is desperate to get his man and will remain hopeful of securing his signature.
Arteta was quizzed on his interest in the player, though opted to give little away.
“I cannot talk about players that aren’t at our football club,” Arteta insisted last week.
Aouar has made 139 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 24 goals.
Aulas questions Arsenal desire over Aouar
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, meanwhile, insists he’s confident Arsenal will not secure a deal to sign Aouar before the window closes.
Asked if he fears Aaour could leave before October 16, the Lyon president said: “No I don’t think so, no offer yet.
“It seems that Arsenal don’t want to, or can’t invest the price for Houssem, who is our best player.”
Arsenal, however, could yet raise funds for Aouar by offloading a number of unwanted stars.
It was reported on Tuesday that Atletico Madrid were keen on a deal for one unwanted midfielder.
Meanwhile, TEAMtalk has also revealed how Arteta has informed Sead Kolasinac he is free to find a new club.
