Gary Neville has explained his belief that while Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is better going forward, Manchester United counterpart Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a better defender.
The two English stars have been the centre of a debate this season about who, overall, is the better player.
Alexander-Arnold has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking full-backs and he is currently two assists away from his record of 16 set last season.
The Liverpool man is also an England international – with Wan-Bissaka in the Three Lions’ Under-21 set-up – but the Red Devils defender has been famed for his defending.
With just over a year separating them – with Wan-Bissaka the oldest of the pair – Neville spoke on an Instagram live video (via the Liverpool Echo) about the debate about the two Premier League stars.
“At this moment in time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the better defender,” the pundit said.
“But Trent going forward… I’ve not seen someone like it since Cafu.
“So Trent is ahead at this point but Wan-Bissaka has settled really well and will be important in these next few years.”
Wan-Bissaka was impressive in his last Premier League performance, keeping Manchester City at bay as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side won the derby 2-0 at Old Trafford in March.
Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, has kicked on having become an irreplaceable part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans last term.
In other news, Neville has also questioned a report which claimed that United must pay £20million if they want to keep Odion Ighalo at the club next season.
Ighalo joined on loan from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua in January and has scored four goals since his arrival.
