RB Leipzig are reminding Timo Werner of Naby Keita’s struggles at Liverpool in a bid to steer him away from a move to Anfield, according to reports.
Werner has been heavily linked with the Reds for a number of months now and has made no attempt in the past to hide his admiration for fellow German Jurgen Klopp and his side’s style of play.
Recent reports have suggested that Liverpool want more time to consider a swoop for the striker, a stance perhaps explained by claims that he will be cheaper if Leipzig fail to win the Bundesliga this season.
Werner reportedly has his heart set on a move to Liverpool and it is said he will reject the likes of Inter Milan to join up with last season’s Champions League winners.
Therefore, according to the Daily Express, Leipzig are “hammering home” to Werner a message first sent out by boss Ralf Rangnick last season about Keita, who left Leipzig for £53million in 2018.
Rangnick told Sky Germany: “Keita was an outstanding player here, but he’s still struggling in Liverpool.
“So far, he’s not the player there that he was here. The surroundings must be right for Timo. That’s the case here.”
Guinea international Keita has made 51 appearances for the Reds so far but his time at Anfield has stuttered due to injuries, the 25-year-old often showing impressive form before missing several matches.
It is hoped, according to the newspaper, that reminding Werner of Keita’s struggles will be enough to keep him at the club beyond this season.
Leipzig sit in third in the Bundesliga table, five points behind leaders Bayern Munich, with the campaign set to resume next weekend after the action was halted in March.
In other news, Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella has reportedly agreed to join Ligue 1 side Nantes upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June.
Chirivella has enjoyed something of a resurgence in the FA Cup and League Cup this term, having struggled to make his mark in previous seasons.
