Gary Neville has hit back at Angel Di Maria after his wife labelled Manchester a “s**thole”.
Neville though says it’s often the case when a player has “played like a drain” that they then attack their former club.
Manchester United paid a then British record fee of £59.7million to sign Di Maria from Real Madrid in 2014 but he failed to live up to the hype, scoring just three goals before eventually moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
“Seriously, all I’d say about it is we hear these stories from time to time where a player has played like a drain,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“Like Di Maria did at United – he was awful and I had great expectations and sort of excitement when he came thinking we’ve signed a top player.
“But he was never interested from day one and what I would say is he maybe needs to look across the road at Sergio Aguero, his compatriot, or Pablo Zabaleta who has done alright in Manchester over the last few years and there hasn’t seemed to be a rush to leave.
“I will defend my city to the hilt and say she just had a bad experience and she did have an unfortunate experience with the robbery, which really would hamper you mentally.
“So I think that probably files her view in terms of the city because I think there’s some decent folk around here.”
Cardoso had said of her time in Manchester: ‘I didn’t want to go to Manchester because at that moment in time, I was friends with Gianinna Maradona, who was married to Sergio Aguero, and we flew from Madrid to his house in Manchester to pay him a visit for two or three days when Angel had a few days off at Real Madrid.
“It was horrible! All of it was horrible, we went to the house and we were like, ‘See you later guys, we’re out of here’.
“When we left, I said to him, ‘Go to any country – except England!’ Anyway, one year later and there we were in England and it was horrible, a s**thole. I didn’t like anything about it, not a thing.
“The women are all skinny, prim and proper… weird. You’re walking down the street and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you or what.
“The food’s disgusting. All the girls are all dolled up to the nines, perfectly made-up and there’s me with my hair in a bun and with no make-up on.”
