The hopes of Man Utd and Arsenal of landing RB Leipzig superstar Dayot Upamecano have taken another blow after the latest comments by the player’s agent.
The France under-21 international has been a key component of the East German side’s rise to prominence in the Bundesliga in recent years.
His 21 starts in the league this term exemplified his importance as Leipzig threw their hat into the race for the Bundesliga prior to football’s hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, with his Leipzig contract expiring in the summer of 2021 and the club’s sporting director previously stating they would not allow players to leave for free, rumours began to swirl over a summer move to the Premier League.
Arsenal emerged as a prime candidate to land the centre-back, while Man Utd were never far from the conversation either.
Leipzig even reportedly dropped their asking price down to just £40m as they began to sweat over the prospect of the player running his contract down next season.
However, the latest comments from Upamecano’s agent – Volker Struth – has poured cold water on a potential switch, with the current financial uncertainty caused by the pandemic cited as the key reason why no deal will materialise.
“I don’t believe in large transfers this summer and I think Upamecano is a player who will demand a large fee,” Struth told ‘Doppelpass’ on Sport 1 (via Goal).
“So the statement has already been made.”
Meanwhile, Man Utd legend Ryan Giggs has revealed the four players that never received the dubious honour of experiencing Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous hairdryer treatment.
The Scottish manager presided over the greatest period in Man Utd’s history during his 26 years with the club.
A scarcely believable 38 major honours were lifted during that time, including an incredible 13 Premier League titles.
Welshman Giggs – who recently ordered Man Utd to complete a £20m capture – was a big part of many of those trophy-laden years, but despite being a top and consistent performer over two decades at Old Trafford, even he occaisonally fell victim to Fergie’s infamous temper.
However, not every major name was subjected to the hairdryer treatment, with Giggs now revealing which four superstars were immune to the verbal onslaught.
