Should their takeover be finalised, reports have suggested that one of their first moves would be to replace current boss Steve Bruce with a new manager and Pochettino is believed to be on the shortlist having built up a strong reputation for himself during his time in England with Southampton and then Spurs. Had Pochettino taken the job at this time in ordinary circumstances then Tottenham, who are still paying the 48-year-old’s full wages, would have been set to receive a sizable compensation package, but the suspension of the season due to the coronavirus means they would miss out on that even if he is in charge of the ‘Toon army’ by the end of the current season. That is because they would only be due compensation if Pochettino started a new job before 19th May, which will mark six months since he was sacked by the North Londoners. However, with teams still not back in training due to the social distancing measures put in place by the government and a decision on when, or if, the Premier League season will be resumed yet to be made, it is almost certain that Pochettino would begin work after that date. Therefore, Spurs could see Pochettino, who guided them to a Champions League final in 2019, back in the top flight of English football before the end of the year and miss out on a considerable fee. What’s more, should sport be given the go ahead to start up again so the season can be finished, they would have to travel Newcastle to take on the Magpies, and potentially ‘Poch’, at some time in the coming months. That may still be some time away though, with the Premier League not expected to be back in action until June at the earliest, while the takeover is yet to be concluded so no official contact with Pochettino has yet been made.
