Roy Keane delivers strong declaration over player wages furore Roy Keane has urged players at top Premier League clubs to ‘stick to their guns’ and refuse to accept wage cuts amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. England’s top players have come under fire after they rejected proposals to accept a collective 30 percent wage deferral or cut to help their clubs come through the Covid-19 crisis, yet former Manchester United captain Keane has offered a typically forthright defence of their stance. “A lot of players are getting criticised for not taking a wage cut, but I think that is nonsense. I wouldn’t take a pay cut if I was at one of the bigger clubs,” Keane told Sky Sports. “I know there is pressure on players, but it is nobody’s business what you do with your wages. You take your wages and you want to be generous, go ahead and do it, but I don’t think players should feel under pressure from clubs to take a wage cut. “The players have signed a contract with clubs and that contract is a personal matter. It is up to the individual and if they want to stick to their guns and take their full wages when they have a billionaire in the background, then do it. “I am really surprised at the amount of people jumping on the bandwagon with criticism of the players because it is nobody’s business. “Certain individuals are getting criticised and I think that’s unfair. “Some of the players who are getting their full wages, they might be the generous people on the planet and let them do what they want with it.   “Just because they are not putting it on social media, it doesn’t mean they are not doing stuff for the NHS or whatever charity they want. “From my own experience at Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, the clubs made it pretty clear to me on any aspect of any contract negotiation I had that it was a business. I signed a contract and I expected clubs to honour that contract. “When the clubs come for the players now, the clubs with billionaires in the background, telling us they have big, big problems. “No, you honour that contract. This idea that we should be getting players to give up their wages with these big, big clubs, forget about it. “These guys with billionaires in the background, they are ruthless people. I’ve heard it all before. Take no notice of it.” Keane went on top suggest he is hoping the current Premier League season is concluded, even though he admitted there may be huge challenges to make that happen. “It’s a minefield at the moment, but hopefully we can get some kind of closure and get the games finished,” he added. “The longer it goes on, I think the less chance that’s going to happen.” Meanwhile, a new suitor has emerged for enigmatic midfielder Paul Pogba, with the club set to fund their approach through the £62m sale of their star striker.   The post Roy Keane delivers strong declaration over player wages furore appeared first on teamtalk.com. - SPORT BETTING
