Mourinho targets £52m ‘monster’ to solve Tottenham defensive issues Tottenham are reportedly set to launch a big-money move for West Ham centre-back Issa Diop this summer. Jose Mourinho is looking to solve the defensive issues that have bugged Spurs since he took over from Mauricio Pochettino in November of last year. The Portuguese tactician wants to revamp his squad with some fresh faces this summer and strengthening his back-line is know to be Mourinho’s top priority. And according to reports in France, via the Daily Star, a move for Diop is firmly on the agenda and there is a stream of ‘constant contact’ between Spurs and the defender’s representatives. Mourinho is a huge fan of the 23-year-old, who has been a standout performer since joining the Hammers from Toulouse in 2018, and has also previously been linked with Manchester United. It is suggested that a £52m swoop could be on the cards for a player who is keen to move on, with Mourinho favouring proven Premier League quality over risking a deal for a foreign imprt. Diop has made 64 Premier League appearances for West Ham, scoring five goals, and was publicly praised by Mourinho when he was United boss. Following a shock 3-1 Hammers win over United two years ago, Mourinho said: “He had a fantastic match. Congratulations to the scout that found a 21-year-old kid Diop – a monster who dominated in the duels.” Meanwhile, Mourinho is reportedly planning to use his link with super-agent Jorge Mendes to sign striker Raul Jimenez this summer. The Wolves frontman has been in superb form this season, scoring 22 goals in all competitions to leave Nuno Espirito Santo’s men flying high in the Premier League and also in the last-16 of the Europa League.     One of those goals was a brilliant winner for the midlands outfit at Spurs back in early March before the season was suspended, and that seems to have heightened Mourinho’s interest in the 28-year-old. However, both Manchester United and Real Madrid are also said to be in the running to sign the Mexico international, who is now valued at £50million – having joined Wolves in a permanent £32.6m deal in the summer of 2019. A report from Soccer Link in France, via Birmingham Live, states that Mourinho will attempt to use his relationship with Mendes to lure Jimenez away from Molineux.
