Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he “condemns” himself for his gesture towards Pep Guardiola during the Manchester derby.
Fernandes had the last laugh in a heated exchange with Guardiola after United beat Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford earlier this month.
Portugal playmaker Fernandes, who set up the opening goal for Anthony Martial, put his fingers to his lips after arguing with Guardiola moments before Scott McTominay sealed victory in injury time.
Fernandes had earlier insisted that Guardiola “didn’t deserve” his respect but speaking to Canal 11 (via Sport Witness) the midfielder has since backtracked on those comments.
The 25-year-old said: “As in everything in life, nothing is defined by what a person has or had and won.
“I condemn myself because the best answer at that moment would have been to remain silent and he would have been practically talking to himself.
“But temper and hot blood almost never let me shut up.”
Fernandes also spoke about the differences between football in England and Portugal, explaining that the intensity is markedly different in the Premier League.
“English football is different from all the others. In Portugal, if Sporting play against a smaller team, most of them close their defence,” he said.
“Here, the teams come to Old Trafford and it is different: they want to press, attack and take risks. The intensity of the game is very high.
“In England you live football in the pure state. There are whistles, applause and songs. We go into the stadium to warm up and it’s empty. We come back from warm-up, it’s half full, and when we come back to play, it’s full.
“The tunnel cancels the noise and as soon as we leave the tunnel there is a noise, something creepy. The Theatre of Dreams is something incredible.”
Fernandes has had a stellar impact since his arrival from Sporting, scoring three goals and assisting four others in nine appearances.
Fellow January arrival Odion Ighalo has also hit the ground running, scoring four goals and playing a huge role in United going 11 matches unbeaten before the postponement of action.
In other news, former United striker Dimitar Berbatov has said that Jadon Sancho would not think twice about moving to United if given the chance.
The Red Devils have been strongly linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund winger in recent months.
