The 25-year-old turned his back on the Reds in summer 2015 to make a highly-controversial move to Manchester City in a deal that eventually cost the Blues £50million. His former manager Brendan Rodgers this week lifted the lid on that transfer by making this revelation. Since that move, Sterling has gone from strength to strength and has emerged as one of English football’s most gifted stars, with Pep Guardiola taking his game on to another level. His record at City currently reads 89 goals in 230 appearances for the club – a strike-rate of a notch every 2.5 matches. The forward remains contracted to the Etihad until summer 2023 and the Blues are desperately trying to negotiate an extension; not least to keep him out of the clutches of chief suitors Real Madrid. However, there remains a big issue: the impending European ban hanging over Man City, with reports claiming the Blues are struggling to get Sterling to commit whilst the UEFA sanctions hang over them. In the last week, Sterling has released an interview stating he has no apathy towards his former employers and actually retains something of a soft spot for them. Speaking via the Instagram account of his representatives Colossal Sports Management, Sterling said: “Would I ever go back to Liverpool? To be honest with you, I love Liverpool. “Don’t get it twisted, they are always in my heart, do you know what I mean? “It’s a team that (has) done a lot for me growing up.” And it may be that interview which has prompted French paper L’Equipe to state that Sterling could yet prove to be the big transfer splash Jurgen Klopp’s side plan to make this summer. Liverpool have been linked with Jadon Sancho, Leon Bailey and Samuel Chukwueze in recent times as they look to bolster their wide attacking areas. But the report in L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) states that Liverpool are ‘thinking’ about a deal to re-sign the player with the latter’s headline even stating that his ‘entourage state anything is possible’. The report adds that City will ‘struggle to retain their jewel’ and that efforts to get him to sign a new deal are ‘in vain’.
