Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has provided an injury update on Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson, but has echoed Jurgen Klopp’s sentiment in refusing to set a target date for his return until the shot-stopper is fully recovered.
Liverpool have been without the man who picked up UEFA’s award for the goalkeeper of the year since their opening day league clash with Norwich in early August.
The calf injury sustained has lead to 32-year-old Spaniard Adrian being tasked with holding the fort for the time being, witha mixed bag of performances leading to a clamour from Liverpool fans for the speedy recovery of their number one gloveman.
Speaking on Liverpool’s official website on the progress the Brazil international is making, goalkeeping coach John Achterberg said: “Ali has been working with Dave [Rydings] in the gym a lot to improve the strength and try to keep the fitness levels up.
“In the last few days he has been out on the pitch to do some catching and footwork, as well as small passing drills.
“He has made steady progress, but it is difficult to say how long it will take or how it will progress.
“It needs time and we cannot look too far ahead, so we take each day as it comes, see how he feels, and then make progress from that.”
The comments back up those made by Jurgen Klopp earlier in the international break.
The German said: “He [has] made steps, of course, but it was a proper injury, so it will still take time.
“How it always is with professional sportsmen, when you have a muscle thing and it takes long, then it takes a while as well until you can bring the muscle to at least the same level it was before.
“A calf muscle is pretty important for jumping – and for a goalie, it is quite important that you can jump from time to time, so it will take time.”
