Jamie Carragher has said that Manchester City remain the favourites to retain the Premier League title for a second time and pip Liverpool to the top flight crown again.
City and Liverpool were involved in one of the league’s greatest title races last term, with Pep Guardiola’s side needing to win their last 14 games and finish on 98 points to prevent the Reds from finishing top.
Champions League holders Liverpool chose not to spend big in the transfer window unlike City, and Carragher – speaking to Sky Sports – said that Guardiola’s team have the edge over their rivals in the race for the title.
“I think it’s a bit early yet. I think we’ve got to probably wait until Christmas,” the Reds legend said. “I do feel around about Christmas time Liverpool and City will have a substantial gap and it looks like there’s a little bit of a gap at this moment.
“But I still think City are favourites and are the best team in the Premier League at this moment because they won the Premier League and they proved that last season.
“So, I think it’s still on Liverpool to overtake City but they’re more than capable.”
Elsewhere, Samuel Eto’o has said that there would be “no explanation” for Reds attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – who finished as joint-top scorers in the Premier League last season – not featuring in the Ballon d’Or top five.
