Declan Rice is the perfect player for Manchester United, according to talkSPORT pair Darren Gough and Sam Matterface.
Rice played his fifth game for England last night in the thrilling 5-3 win over Kosovo and the West Ham man had a mixed night winning the ball which led to one of Jadon Sancho’s goals, whilst also seeing a square ball cut out to allow Kosovo to score.
It’s hardly a revolutionary idea from the radio station because Rice, 20, was linked with United at the start of the summer with Sky Sports News reporting that both United and Man City enquired over Rice’s availability in the summer.
However, both were told in no uncertain terms that he was not for sale and Rice declared his “focus is fully on playing for West Ham” after signing a new contract in December.
The talkSPORT hosts are convinced that Rice would be ideal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
“I think that’s what they need, I think they need someone in that position,” Matterface said.
“At the moment they’re playing [Paul] Pogba a little bit deeper because [Nemanja] Matic’s legs have gone and can’t get around the pitch as much as he did before, [Scott] McTominay’s playing alongside Pogba as a result of that.
“I think ideally, and they did this in the game against Southampton, they pushed Pogba into a No 10 position when they were chasing the game.
“But Declan Rice for £90m, is that something you could see happening for Manchester United?
“Is it the right way to sort of spend your money?”
Former England cricketer Gough said £90m is too much for Rice.
“Well again it’s over the top isn’t it,” Gough replied.
“He’s comfortable to receive the ball in all areas, he played really, really deep didn’t he [against Bulgaria], he almost played like another centre-half in that second half, he was the first one to get the ball off Maguire.
“We always see Maguire run out with the ball but at the minute Rice wants to collect the ball in that position, he wants to be doing that sort of stuff.
“Yes, I can see him playing for Manchester United but I think for West Ham fans, I feel for them.
“West Ham now actually feel they are getting a side together that can compete.”
Solskjaer is understood to be looking for a holding player and United were heavily linked with Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff in the summer.
