The Germany defender has struggled to find his best form since a £35million switch from Valencia in summer 2016 and has been phased out of Unai Emery’s line-up this season after the £7m deadline day arrival of David Luiz forced him down to fifth choice in the pecking order. Sokratis started alongside Luiz against Burnley at the weekend, with Rob Holding and Calum Chambers pushing for places on the bench. And now according to The Sun, who cites Italian source ForzaRoma, Mustafi is on the brink of a switch to Roma, with the Italian side still seeking to replace the departed Kostas Manolas, who moved to Napoli. Roma had been looking at Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren, but could not agree a similar loan-to-buy package with the Reds.
