While still “only early”, Harry Maguire showed all the “qualities” of a world-class centre-half on his Manchester United debut.
That’s according to former United star and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who watched on in admiration as Maguire – the world’s most expensive defender – made an impressive debut as United claimed a 4-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed by Maguire’s debut as the defender was named man of the match, where Marcus Rashford’s double complemented goals from Anthony Martial and another debutant Daniel James.
On Maguire‘s performance against Frank Lampard’s side, Neville tweeted on Monday morning: “I loved Maguire yesterday. Top centre backs don’t sweat, look calm, don’t spend time on their backsides, win headers, are composed on the ball, cover others and lead by example.
“It’s only early but he demonstrated all those qualities. No sign of the price tag or Old Trafford phasing him either!”

Maguire said there was room for improvement, but was delighted to make a winning start on his debut for United.
“It’s a great start for myself and obviously the team,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “We rode our luck a little bit in the first half, we gave them too many chances and were sloppy on the ball.
“In the second half we were a lot better, were much more like ourselves and controlled the game and we fully deserved the three points.
“It was the first game of the season at Old Trafford, so there were few nerves in the first half. We didn’t handle the ball well enough and gave it away in dangerous areas.
“But in the second half we kept it better, moved it nicely and if you give it to our front three you’ve always got a chance of scoring because they’re so dangerous.”
