Newcastle chairman Mike Ashley appears to have found new vigour for life at the St James’ Park helm by telling Manchester United in no uncertain terms about their interest in Sean Longstaff.
Despite only having eight Premier League appearances to his name, Longstaff is believed to be a top target for United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to add exciting young players to his squad.
An offer of around £25m plus add ons is said to be on the table, after Newcastle rejected the Red Devils’ initial approach. It has been claimed that Newcastle are holding out for double that after seeing the price that United paid Crystal Palace for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
But having this week strengthened Newcastle’s attack with the club record £40m signing of Brazilian striker Joelinton, Ashley insists he is in no mood to allow Longstaff to move on.
“The message we want to put out is that he is not for sale,” Ashley told the Daily Mail. “If you’ve got one like Sean – keep him.”
The message will be music to Newcastle supporters’ ears, with Ashley’s stance echoing that of new manager Steve Bruce earlier this week.
“We don’t want to sell our best young players, that’s for sure. So that won’t happen. I’m very confident (he won’t go),” Bruce said in China earlier this week when questioned about Longstaff.
The player himself appears to be keeping a cool head amid all the speculation.
“If somebody had said to be me a year ago I would be in this position, I would probably have laughed at them,” he told the Chronicle.
“For me, it is all a positive really. It gives you even more confidence. When I was in for a short amount of time, people took notice of me.
“It is flattering, but my job is at Newcastle. The new boss is coming in and it’s a clean slate for everybody – including me.
“I just get my head down and work on the pitch. Like anybody knows, you are no use to anybody if you aren’t fit.”
