Rio Ferdinand used his sway to persuade former England colleague Jonathan Woodgate to sign Marcus Browne, we can reveal.
Browne is managed by Ferdinand’s management company New Era Global Sports which is headed by his former agent Jamie Moralee.
Boro are on a severely restricted budget this summer, but they have snapped up Browne from West Ham for less than £500,000.
Browne had been set to join League One Oxford United, before Ferdinand became involved and spoke with Woodgate, and persuaded him to take a chance on the young winger.
