Real Zaragoza have released an official statement after reports Manchester United had signed one of the young stars.
AS (via Sport Witness) have claimed that Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal and Valencia have all been chasing Mateo Mejia, however it’s the Old Trafford club who have seemingly convinced the 16-year-old to head to the Premier League.
Reports on Monday suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will wrap up a €670k deal for the midfielder but AS states that United will actually only have to pay the player’s €150,oo0 training rights.
AS adds that there has been ‘outrage’ over the potential transfer, with the youngster understood to have said goodbye to his Zaragoza team-mates – although the Spanish Second Division side appear to have been kept in the dark.
All the speculation has forced the Spanish side to issue a statement to clarify their understanding of Mejia’s current situation: “Given the information in the United Kingdom about the Real Zaragoza cadet footballer Mateo Mejia and the interest of Manchester United for his signing, Real Zaragoza wants to clarify the following:
“Mateo Mejía is a footballer who belongs to the discipline of Real Zaragoza in the Cadet category, linked to the Club with a federative card until June 30, 2020.
“Real Zaragoza has not reached any agreement for the transfer of this player to Manchester United.”
