Arsenal, Tottenham beaten to signing of free-transfer international Arsenal and Tottenham target Hector Herrera will sign for Atletico Madrid on a free transfer this summer, according to ESPN. The north London pair have been linked with Mexico star Herrera, but “a source close to the Portuguese club has told ESPN” that the 29-year-old is on verge of announcing he has signed for the LaLiga giants. Porto central midfielder Herrera could also see centre-back Felipe and left-back Alex Telles follow him to Madrid. Herrera has asked to be excluded from Mexico’s Gold Cup squad due to the demands of hard season in Portugal, which will go down to the final day on Saturday with Porto in second spot and needing Benfica to lose to Santa Clara, whilst beating Sporting. “I feel it is necessary to fully recover after the physical and mental wear of the season, in which I’ve played over 50 official matches for my current club; as well as to have the chance to define my professional future,” Herrera had said in a statement. Herrera is out of contract in June and is available for free and with Arsenal looking for a replacement for Aaron Ramsey he was understood to be on their radar. Record recently claimed Herrera and Miguel Almiron, who signed for Newcastle, were the two targets Unai Emery had in mind. The Mexico star has racked up over 200 appearances for the Portuguese heavyweights, as well as 70 international caps and has ample Champions League experience. Tottenham were also reported to be interested in Herrera with Il Corriere dello Sport claiming Spurs were keen, along with AC Milan and Real Madrid.     The post Arsenal, Tottenham beaten to signing of free-transfer international appeared first on teamtalk.com. - SPORT BETTING
