Rooney was red carded and Acosta was subbed on 73 minutes as DC were thumped at home in the US capital and the attacking midfielder was “sad” with his and the team’s performance. “I’m obviously happy [United] were here,” Acosta said via Goal. “They came to see me, and obviously I just went out and tried my best. “Today wasn’t my day, we were up against a great opponent and in reality I’m just sad for the group’s performance today, and mine too.” DC had been going well in early season in MLS and Acosta currently has a goal and an assist to his name after hitting 10 goals and claiming 17 assists in an impressive season previously. But they were firmly second best at Audi Field with a Diego Rossi hat-trick and a Carlos Vela goal sinking them. Acosta almost got a £7.5million move to Paris Saint-Germain in January, but the move fell through at the final hurdle. At the time Sky Sports claimed “two Premier League clubs, including Manchester City” were also “interested” in the player. Acosta, who is out of contract in October 2019 – the end of the MLS season, will be able to negotiate pre-contract with any non-MLS side this summer and then leave on a free transfer.
