Former Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto says it is “a little bit” his fault that his Anfield career under Brendan Rodgers failed to spark into life.
Alberto moved to Merseyside from Sevilla in July 2013, spending three seasons with the club.
The Spaniard only made 12 appearances, all of which came in the 2013/14 season – including nine Premier League outings.
However, two successive loans back to Spain followed before he sealed a permanent move to Lazio in 2016.
From there, he has reached another level, notching six goals and 16 assists in 34 appearances this term as the Serie A side battle Juventus for the title.
Speaking to France Football (via Sport Witness), Alberto has revealed the reasons why he failed to show such quality for the Reds.
“I think it’s a little bit my fault,” the midfielder said. “I didn’t do everything necessary to be at my level in terms of work and focus.
“What I should have done at 20, I was only able to do it at 25. It’s a shame, I lost a few years. I’m 27 now. I’m trying to make the most of it and I think there’s a lot of time left to continue to enjoy myself.
Alberto added: “I left Spain quickly, and especially a context, at Barcelona’s B team. At Liverpool, I adapted well, but it happened bit by bit.
“I finished by reaching a good level, with the possibility of playing a little bit. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to win the Premier League.”
Alberto has made one appearance for Spain, which he earned early on in his spell in Rome.
KLOPP REVEALS LIVERPOOL PLAN FOR JONES

Elsewhere, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his side will “have a lot of fun” with midfielder Curtis Jones.
The 19-year-old scored his third Reds goal – his first in the Premier League – on Sunday.
The strike topped off a fantastic week for the Merseyside-born teenager, who signed a new deal on Saturday.
And Klopp says he has exciting plans for the midfielder.
