Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left on the bench for their North London derby with Tottenham due to a “disciplinary issue.”
Aubameyang, 31, is the club’s highest earner and was expected to head the Gunners‘ forward in the contest.
When the teamsheets broke, however, eyebrows were raised when the Gabon superstar was curiously left out of the starting eleven.
Speaking to Sky Sports in the pre-match build-up, Arteta revealed that his centre-forward was in fact in line to start the match.
An undisclosed “disciplinary issue” laid waste to that plan, however, with Arteta stating: “He was going to start the game, we had a disciplinary issue, we have drawn the line and we move on. He’s on the bench.
“We keep that internally, we have a process that we have to respect for every game and that’s it.
“It was a decision made after evaluating everything and who Auba and what he’s done and that’s it.
“We have other players who can play, recently we have changed the team quite a lot and there are players who are willing to play and deserve a chance, so I’m comfortable with that.”
