Ajax youngster likened to De Ligt gives reasons for Liverpool snub Ajax defender Perr Schuurs has, once again, denied that he will make a winter move to Liverpool as he wants to continue his career in the Netherlands. The 21-year-old has been linked with the Reds since impressing when the sides met in the Champions League. The Merseysiders were said to have tabled a bid in November, according to Corriere dello Sport. A fee in the region of £13m was mooted but it appears as though the centre-back will be staying put. Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements has been well documented following Virgil van Dijk’s serious injury. The Dutchman will be out until at least April although Jurgen Klopp’s side have coped without him. However, a player likened to compatriot Matthijs de Ligt would certainly improve the Anfield club’s squad. It remains to be seen what happens in the future but, for now, the Netherlands Under-21 ace is going nowhere. “I’m now a starting player which was my goal beforehand. I am very happy about that,” he said. “I feel at home here. I’m not really in favour of going abroad early. I feel at home here so I want to play here for a few more seasons. “It is not always fun to read [criticism]. You know when you play at Ajax that you are under a magnifying glass. But if you come out well, you will only be appreciated more.” Klopp looks to the future Liverpool may continue their pursuit of Schuurs next summer and are already looking long term. It was confirmed earlier this week that they have signed young defender Calum Scanlon from Birmingham City. At just 15 years of age, he will join the Liverpool academy. Klopp has given his youth players many opportunities and Scanlon is eager to start work. “Happy to sign with Liverpool FC,” he wrote on Instagram. “A big thank you to BCFC and everyone who has helped me progress to this point, but as of today I start a new chapter. The hard work continues, let’s go!” It will be a few years before he is ready for the big time. But Liverpool’s current rearguard have stepped up in the absence of their talisman. Van Dijk was injured in October’s Merseyside derby after a rash challenge for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Since then, they have won six and drawn three Premier League games to sit top of the standings. Liverpool are next in action when they welcome West Brom to Anfield on Sunday. Ajax defender Perr Schuurs has, once again, denied that he will make a winter move to Liverpool as he wants to continue his career in the Netherlands.

The 21-year-old has been linked with the Reds since impressing when the sides met in the Champions League. The Merseysiders were said to have tabled a bid in November, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Klopp looks to the future

Liverpool may continue their pursuit of Schuurs next summer and are already looking long term.

The hard work continues, let’s go!”
